Our History
1950 - The Arrival
The Riverstone story began over 70 years ago with founder Peter Inglese, who moved from Italy to Yarra Valley in 1950 as a young boy. Growing up in Healesville, he developed a appreciation for the region's unique qualities, recognizing the cool climate and fertile soils as perfect for growing high-quality grapes. This vision laid the foundation for Riverstone.
1976 - The Vision
In 1976, Peter, along with his wife and three children took a pivotal step by acquiring 80 acres of land located on the scenic banks of the Yarra River. This decision stemmed from their quest for ideal conditions to cultivate fertile soil secure a consistent rainfall, and enjoy unobstructed sunlight. Peter's unwavering commitment to the craft of fine wine production brought his long-held childhood dreams closer than ever, enabling him to transform those aspirations into a concrete reality.
1992 - The Beginnings
In 1992, work started on the Riverstone homestead, which combines strength and beauty with its use of bluestone & 100 year old Oregon timber from the Melbourne Market. Located at the highest point in the beautiful Yarra Valley, the homestead enjoys a gentle breeze from the nearby mountains. Additionally, the calming sounds of the Yarra River add to the peaceful atmosphere.
1995 - The Establishment
In the year 1995, Peter took the significant step of establishing a vineyard. The initial planting of vines took place in December of 1996, covering a total of 10 hectares. This included 2 hectares dedicated to Shiraz, 2 hectares for Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 hectares for Pinot Noir, 2 hectares for Chardonnay, and finally, 2 hectares for Sauvignon Blanc. These early plantings have laid the groundwork for what has now become the Riverstone vineyard that we are familiar with today.
1999 - Open to Public
In 1999, Peter embarked on the second chapter of his winemaking journey, signifying a pivotal moment as he launched comprehensive wine production. This endeavor was complemented by the establishment of a restaurant at Bluestone Estate, offering a distinguished experience for both wine connoisseurs and culinary patrons.
2020 to Present - Handing over the Torch
In 2020, Peter retired, leaving behind a lasting legacy shaped by his passion and expertise. His commitment to preserving the local soil and protecting the land he inherited continues, ensuring the heritage of the winery lives on.
